A generator is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Generators are often used to provide electricity in places where there is no access to a centralized power grid.

Generators work on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When a conductor moves in a magnetic field, an electric current is induced in it. In a generator, the motor turns the rotor, creating a rotating magnetic field that induces electric current in the stator windings.

Inverter generators

Inverter generators produce more stable and cleaner electricity than traditional generators because they use electronic control to stabilize voltage and frequency. This makes them more suitable for powering sensitive electronics.

When choosing a generator for your home, you need to consider:

Generator power (in watts)

Type of fuel (gasoline, diesel, gas)

Running time without refueling

Noise level

Availability of automatic start

To calculate the capacity of the generator, add up the capacity of all the appliances that will be connected to the generator at the same time. Also take into account the starting power of appliances with motors, which may be higher than their rated power.

Regular maintenance of the generator is important for reliable operation. It is generally recommended that maintenance be performed every 100-200 hours of operation or once a year, whichever comes first. This includes changing oil, changing filters and checking spark plugs.

Using the generator indoors is extremely dangerous due to the emission of carbon monoxide. Generators should only be used outdoors or in well-ventilated areas to ensure safety from exhaust fumes.

Fuel consumption depends on the type of generator, its capacity and load. Fuel consumption is usually stated in liters per hour at 50% or 100% load. For example, a 5 kW gasoline generator can consume about 1-2 liters of gasoline per hour.

If the generator does not start, you should check:

Fuel availability and quality

Oil level (some generators will not start if the oil level is low)

Spark plugs and their condition

Air filter

Electrical connections and fuses
