Sometimes the standard sound in the car is not enough, and its owner starts looking for ways to fix it. One of the weak points of the factory acoustics is the lack of bass. The easiest way to improve it is to replace the speakers in the rear shelf.

Do I need speakers in the rear shelf

The rear is needed for those who want high volume, enveloping and surround sound, and add low frequencies to the system with minimal investment.

Choice of speakers in the rear shelf: round or oval?

Oval Speakers

Since the 90s, we have liked the solution of the ovals in the rear shelf. In installation, it requires minimal costs-but it looks impressive and gives good bass. These speakers are popularly known as "eggs" and have one advantage: a large cone area for bass reproduction. For many, a subwoofer was an unattainable luxury. Therefore, for good bass, either many speakers or two speakers with the largest area were installed. This is the area that ovals have.

The oval speakers are designed to compensate for the lack of bass that the front speaker creates.

Round Speakers

Round speakers at the back are mostly modern solutions. The loudspeakers in the rear parcel shelf are a thing of the past, but many automakers continue to install them nonetheless. At the same time, they move away from oval shapes and prefer round ones.

This is not to say that ovals in the rear shelf are better than round ones-and vice versa. If you want more bass-we put oval speakers. If you want a little sub-sound-put the usual round ones.

In general, it is correct to install a full-fledged subwoofer for bass, because no speakers can replace its range.

Preparing to install speakers on a rear shelf

A speaker without decoration, when we hold it in our hands, practically does not bass. It becomes audible only when installed in a certain design-a door or a rear shelf. Moreover, simply screwed to the tin, the speaker will not sound right and beautiful. It should be hard-coded to the panel.

To unlock the speaker's potential-moreover, the more expensive a speaker is, the harder it is to unlock its potential-you need to invest time and effort in preparing the seat.

Noise and vibration isolation

The speaker radiates in two directions: front and rear. The back radiation is parasitic for the listener, therefore the installer must exclude the back wave from reaching the listener. He needs to separate the trunk volume from the passenger compartment as well as possible thanks to the correct sound insulation.

For this, a vibration and noise absorber is used. The task of the installer is to process the shelf as best as possible, so that as a result, sounds are emitted only by the speaker, or rather its front side. It should not play along and rattle, and the wires should not ring.

Podiums

The machine's original metal is not designed to mount speakers with a good magnet system.

In addition, it often has an uneven surface. To create the necessary conditions for the installation of the speakers, a rigid podium is screwed to it.

When does a rear shelf speaker need an amplifier?

There are two main types of people who use car audio. The first ones like it to be loud and driving. The second listen to music in the background while driving, so that it does not distract from the traffic situation. If you are one of the first-you want to surprise your friends, but open doors in nature and get great sound-you absolutely need an amplifier.

The job of the amplifier is simply to amplify the input signal. The head unit usually outputs 18-20 watts, which is enough for listening at volume when we communicate. If you want more, we put in an amplifier that increases the amplitude of the signal from the head unit. This gives us a louder sound.

The manufacturer puts its potential into the speaker. There are speakers originally designed for low power. They have high sensitivity without claims to super detail, quality, and so on.

And there are bass speakers in the rear shelf of the higher series, which can convey good bass and furious attack of the instruments. But for this, the power supplied to them must be greater. To unlock the potential inherent in them by the manufacturer, you will need a car amplifier.

What to do when replacing the OEM speakers in the rear shelf

New footprint. Factory speakers usually come with plastic enclosures. When they are replaced, the seat is also removed. To create a new one, podiums are used-transition rings made of plastic or wood;

Shelf processing. The plastic from which the shelf is made also matters. Now manufacturers are saving on its thickness, so the shelf is highly susceptible to vibrations. When you install a more powerful speaker than the factory one, it is not the speaker that starts playing, but the plastic. You need to immediately prepare the shelf to get rid of extraneous sounds.

Each time the installation takes place individually, but it never ends with unscrewing the old speaker and screwing in a new one. At least minimal training is required.

Can speakers be installed in a shelf without speaker holes?

Not worth it if ... in the car, the rear shelf is a carrier. In this case, it adds rigidity to the body, and it is highly discouraged to drill holes in it. Many still go to make a hole and screw in an oval-as a result, glasses begin to burst, the integrity of the car is violated. If there are no seats in such a car initially, it is not recommended to make them.

You can, if ... it's a hatchback with a folding shelf. In such a car, you can cut holes and insert speakers without any problem. A good subwoofer will not replace this, but it will become a budget solution that will give an increase in sound quality in the shortest possible time for minimal money.
