The question of whether it is worth soundproofing the floor of a car arises quite often. The reasons for doubts can be different: from banal savings and unwillingness to make the car heavier to not knowing what material to choose for these purposes. There are much fewer of those who refuse the procedure in principle, because it is enough to drive in a “naked” car only once, and it immediately becomes clear that soundproofing the floor of the car is what you should do first.

Why soundproof the floor

The floor of the passenger compartment and the floor of the trunk, the arches and the bottom are significant sources of noise in the car. And this is natural: all the most important components and assemblies are in contact with this zone during movement, respectively, noise and vibration are transmitted through the floor to the cabin. This also applies to contact with the road surface, especially not very high quality. The significant area of ​​​​this site also plays its role.

It is also worth considering that the floor in the car is always in contact with an aggressive environment – at least this is the accumulation of moisture. Proper sound insulation of the car floor – stages

Preparing the space and surface is the most important step, as it guarantees the success of all further steps.

To prepare the space, it is necessary to dismantle the interior: the seats, center console and other elements that block access to the floor are removed. The floor covering also needs to be removed.

Surface preparation includes thorough cleaning of dirt, dust and rust. After that, it is necessary to degrease all treated areas. This is the only way to guarantee good adhesion of materials, resistance to corrosion and durability of sound insulation.

The next stage is the application of vibration-absorbing, sound-absorbing and heat-insulating materials. Depending on how much money they are willing to spend on this event, the processing option is also selected. The price of soundproofing a car floor can be different, but the result is always important. And for this, it is worthwhile to consciously approach the process, choosing the material not by cost, but by how it is suitable for processing a particular car.

What materials to use for floor soundproofing

Let's consider processing options and specific materials that are suitable for vibration and sound insulation of the cabin floor and trunk floor.

First of all, this area requires the application of a thick vibration absorber (minimum 3 mm), for the wheel arches a material with a thickness of 4.2 mm is used. The areas under the feet of the driver and passengers are processed, as well as the rear passengers. And these are the areas where there are no stiffeners.

It is imperative to ensure that technological holes and wiring are not sealed. If the processing is carried out without removing the torpedo, we try as much as possible to get under it and raise the standard sound insulation.

First layer: vibration isolation

Recommended for premium processing StP Bimast Bomb Premium 4.2 mm or StP Aero Plus 3 mm or StP Murena 3 mm. These materials do an excellent job with vibrations, converting vibrational energy into heat. They are designed to treat the most vibration-loaded areas, while strengthening the body and protecting it from corrosion. Murena is suitable for those who care about maximum lightness of the car.

StP Aero Plus is used to process the trunk floor, spare wheel well. Bimast Bomb Premium suits the rear arches well.

In some cases, if the weight of the car after soundproofing is not too important, and for maximum efficiency, you can treat the entire floor of the passenger compartment with Bimast Bomb Premium vibration isolation.

For standard machining, StP Devil's Gold 3 mm vibration absorbing material will be good. At the same time, it is still better to choose Bimast Bomb Premium for wheel arches, even if you want to save money.

If you decide to go the most economical way, the best option would be to choose materials StP GB 3 (on the floor itself) and StP GB 4 (on the arches) . These are elastic vibration isolators based on sealed mastic, and a foil layer is used on top. They are easy to apply, as the mounting adhesive layer is strong enough and provides powerful adhesion.

Second and third layers – soundproofing and thermal insulation

There are several options to consider for maximum processing efficiency.

For those who choose to use popular classic materials, StP GreenFlex 4, an excellent heat and sound insulator based on foamed rubber and adhesive based, which is not afraid of moisture. We cover them with all the vibration isolation that is on the floor. We close the arches (rear and front) STP Biplast Premium 15A armor. As a shock layer that will increase efficiency and eliminate noise in the middle and high frequency range, we suggest using soundproofing materials StP NoiseBlock 2 and StP NoiseBlock 3. We process the arches and the floor with them. They create an impenetrable soundproofing carpet. The noise block does not need additional heating during installation.

StP Bromo and Qattara sandwiches for maximum effect in the premium segment.

Sandwiches from StP are easy to use and do an excellent job. This is a kit – the second and third layers in one sheet, plus a durable adhesive layer that is not afraid of moisture.

Sandwich StP Bromo 12mm combines viscoelastic polyurethane foam with a latex impregnation in the base, and an impact sound membrane with an interesting design. The material is specially designed for the perfect treatment of the rear wheel arches, the tunnel, the floor under the seats.

For areas where moisture is likely to occur, we recommend using a sandwich StP Qattara 6mm. This is a material based on expanded polypropylene granules, it is optimal for processing the front floor of the car and the trunk floor.

Experts call both of these options the most effective. Each of them replaces the second and third layers of sound insulation. Both convenient and fast.

Standard processing of the second and third layers (materials of the Optimum line)

For those who still do not want to deviate from the classics, we recommend using StP BlackTon 4 and BlackTon 6 sound-absorbing self-adhesive materials as a second layer. They are made of recycled pressed polyurethane foam with a polymer binder. BlackTon effectively acts as a second layer applied to vibration-absorbing materials.

Use StP NoiseBlock 2 as the third layer.

Sound-absorbing material StP Biplast 10K, based on polyurethane foam, is suitable for processing arches. It is stretchy, cuts easily and handles noise very well.

Economy processing (Materials of the Base line)

Sound and heat insulating material StP Barrier 4 KS, which is based on polyethylene foam, it copes well with high and medium frequencies, protecting the driver and passenger from various hum and noise.

Important! When processing the interior floor, you need to be as careful as possible in choosing the material and adjusting it in thickness. Especially in the presence of plastic skins that come into contact with metal. Otherwise, it will not be possible to assemble the interior so that the plastic trim and the hole under the clip match.
